Biochemistry Programs

The department offers several specializations within the UBC Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree program, all of which can be combined with the co-op program. After completing your first year in science you can select:

Designed for the scholar who wants to explore the possibility of further study in biochemistry and molecular biology, and ideal for learners who are already keen on the prospect of graduate studies. This program provides a more in-depth opportunity for learning biochemistry and molecular biology with a capstone 4th year thesis project opportunity built into the program. The 4th year of this program has ample opportunities to learn in smaller groups, both in specialized laboratory courses and theoretical classes. To enter into the honours program select the biochemistry majors program and eligible students will be invited to transfer into the Honours program in the fall of your second year.

Provides learners with an opportunity to explore and engage with the fundamental ideas and concepts that underpin life at the molecular scale. Graduates of this program will have ample opportunities to participate in hands-on biochemistry experiences in labs as well as theoretical understanding in lecture-based courses. This program is built with room to explore other fields and develop breadth or a multi-disciplined approach to problem solving.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology serves as a central hub for various scientific disciplines. Students from other programs looking to enhance their understanding of core biochemistry and who are interested in taking advanced biochemistry courses may find this option appealing. To pursue a minor in Biochemistry, students must develop a course plan in consultation with the Program Director for the Minor in Biochemistry.

For the scholar who is keen on applying their deep foundation in both Biochemistry and Chemistry and is keen on the prospect of graduate studies in either or a combined field of study, this program is ideally suited for you. In this program you will explore topics relating to Biochemistry and Chemistry as well as gaining a solid foundation in practical laboratory skills, both in Biochemistry labs, a 4th year thesis project as well as in chemistry laboratory settings.

For learners who are interested in an exceptional foundation in both Biochemistry and Chemistry, this program is for you. The combined program offers the same fundamental courses as the major program while adding more advanced upper year chemistry courses, both in organic and physical chemistry.

This unique program offers the opportunity to delve into the practice and theory of biochemistry at UBC while gaining valuable experience with forensic science at BCIT. This program is ideally suited to learners who are keen on a career in forensic science who also wish to further explore their interests in foundational biochemistry. Learners take courses on both campuses in years 2 through 4.
