Our graduate program provides advanced education and access to leading research opportunities and state-of-the-art infrastructure, designed to prepare students for successful careers in research. We offer both MSc and PhD degree programs, with many of our master’s students transitioning into the PhD track by their second year.
Our program spans multiple interdisciplinary research centers at UBC, including the Life Sciences Institute and the Michael Smith Laboratories. This offers our students the unique opportunity to collaborate with researchers from a wide range of disciplines. Our faculty are dedicated to providing robust financial support, and both the university and department offer additional funding to PhD students to cover tuition costs.
A master’s degree is typically completed within two years, while a PhD usually takes between four to six years. Upon graduation, many of our students secure positions at prestigious academic institutions, pursue careers in the thriving biotechnology sector in British Columbia or pursue alternate careers including scientific communications, entrepreneurship, data analyst, or grant and project management.
